City on a grain of salt. Tuzla means a place of salt and it lays on top of the salt lake. It is suspected it has been there for around 7000 years as one of the oldest places in Europe.

Endless selection of coffee

You may need air to live but for Bosnians coffee is more important.
Do you always buy the same brand of coffee or trying out different coffees from around the world?
A friend of mine visited Burundi recently and she brought me a pack of really tasty coffee, so my answer to the question above would be: yes, I do like to try out different kinds of coffee, all the time.

Come for more coffee next Sunday...

Lake shells

One more detail from the beach.
I have seen some people use these shells as baits for fishing. They crash them, than put the meat on the hook and voila if they’re ‘lucky’ they’d go home with a fish, although there is a huge problem with people illegally fishing with nets and unfortunately leaving it almost empty.

Beach... yeah right ... what beach?!?

I'm still stuck on the beach and it's not pretty.

Beach debris

I just had to have a straight answer to the Nathalie’s from Sydney question yesterday =) and this is the last thing I thought one can find on the shores of Modrac Lake just outside of the city.

Mags... papers...

If you’re interested in politics you’ll go for Sobodna Bosna - Free Bosnia or Dani - Days, if you want to put your feet up and relax you’ll go for Azra, Gloria… Cosmopolitan.
Djerdan or Skandi if you’re enjoying crosswords.
Oslobodjenje - Freedom is the daily newspaper with the highest circulation. They were awarded the newspaper of the World in 1992.
There are many more, these are just a few.

What do you usually read?
How often do you buy magazines or paper?

Vertigo

This is a typical high rise apartment block in Tuzla.
How do they differ from skyscrapers in your city, if you have any?
Do you feel dizzy when sky high?

Hi Ame glad to see you're alive and kicking, =) I'm coming over to Santa Clara often (ah that fallafel place looks so tempting) but blogger doesn't allow me to leave any comments... problems, problems =)

The same goes to Irredento, sorry guys.

Tasty ćevapi

I invite you for a Sunday dinner today for a portion of ćevapi – ćevapčići, pronounced chevapi and chevapchichi as in cherry. Ćevapi is a national dish of B&H and from city to city recipe slightly deviates. If you can’t come over, here is the recipe should you wish to make it yourself.

Ćevapčići or ćevapi:
1 lb/500g lean ground beef
2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1 egg, beaten
1 red onion
Mix all the ingredients together. Shape in thumb-sized or croquette size shapes. Grill on open grill until done (can be fried in a frying pan also). Serve with pita bread or bread rolls, and freshly sliced onion rings, that’s an optional extra. I like to put pepper on top just before eating.

Bon Appetite

What’s your favourite dish?

Za-Gor Te-Nay - The Spirit With the Hatchet

This graffiti is on the shopping canter above the entrance of the second hand comic shop.

Comics are very popular in B&H but peculiar thing is that the most popular are the Italian ones and a lot of them have wild west and cowboy themes.
The number one comic hero is Zagor, he lives in Darkwood, he was raised by Indians and his side kick is Mexican called Cico Ramirez Martinez… the two of them together fight evil to make the wild west better place to live in. He is the one in the middle in a red tee-shirt.

My favourite of all times is hilariously funny Alan Ford. Also the good ones are Art Spiegelman’s Maus, Asterix, Tex Willer, Commandant Mark and wolfs from Ontario… Batman, Superman... list is endless ‘cause I like comic books.

Do you love comics, what is your favourite?

Have a nice weekend.

Lion the keeper

This summer quite a few LOT houses were opened around the country. This one is a newly built and has a lion keeper on its gates, just to ‘keep’ up with the fashion of all the concrete flamingos, ducks, unicorns… that are popular in the area =)
As far as I know this brave lion is a keeper of the Finn soldiers.

Liaison and Observation Teams (LOT) were implemented to promote closer interaction between EUFOR or European Union Force and the local community.

To be or not to be...

The last two posts by Kris from Szentes got me thinking of disappearing of the grocery or small family kind of shops we had on every corner just few years back. Chain stores with competitive prices forced all those small shops to close down and this one you see here is a rarity.

I’m not quite sure who is the owner now but nowadays they mostly sell bakery products and a few bits and bobs. Most likely they are closely connected or even owned by a big bakery. You have to sell lot’s of loafs of bread to justify the costs. They did sell all bread the day photo was taken =)

This shop is mostly deserted like you see in this shot and it’s hard to imagine it was buzzing with people not long ago. What a shame!

Colours

Nice to have a break on the Salty Square at one of these and watch the world go by.
Many new facades in the background. City centre has really become colourful in the last few months. Kudos to Jasmin Imamovic, Tuzla's mayor.

Behram Begova Medresa

Behram Beg medresa – Islamic school was established in 1626 and has been working for 323 years.
The school building has been built in a
Pseudo Moorish architectural style in 19th century, and was reconstructed many times afterwards.

In the 1949 on the 15th of January after the winter brake, 100 attending pupils were informed that the school will be closed until further notice (unknown reason to me). School has never reopened again in this location, and that year only 24 pupils continued their schooling in Sarajevo.
The building was knocked down in 1974. and the only part that remained was the school gate, which you can see in this photo. The gate was restored first time in 1975 then 1990 and once more after the war in 1997.

Forty four years after the door closed The Behram Beg school has reopened at different location and now includes boarding facilities attached to the new mosque.

Have a nice week ahead.

Sonet XVIII

Why not finish this week with a shot of a gorgeous red Mercedes and my favourite Shakespeare's XVIII Sonnet.

XVIII
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature's changing course untrimmed:
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st,
Nor shall death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st,
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Do you have a favourite Shakespeare sonnet?

Have a nice weekend wherever you are.

Apples, apples and more apples

See what happens when you’re too busy to pick your apples!
These could be used to make jam, vinegar, even cider, more jam and if there’s some more left, for eating.

The photo was taken in one private garden in the city centre near lake Panonica.

DP Theme Day: 'Something that is about to disappear soon'

“Repairing umbrellas” - “Popravljamo kisobrane”

Once upon a time umbrellas were very expensive…
Believe it or not this man is an umbrella repairer and is ‘still in business’, well from time to time he gets an odd job. His small shop has been here forever, as far as can anybody remember.

When I asked him how business is going, he answered: “umbrellas are so cheap nowadays, you can buy one for 3KM ($2) but people still come to repair their old umbrellas that have sentimental value or the ones that are 'inherited' from the family”.
Ferid is possibly the last umbrella repairer in the world (am I pushing it?) and when he retires, in a not so distant future, this charming little business will completely disappear.

P.S. Hehe, if you have an umbrella repairer in your city, keep it to yourself, LOL ;)

57 cities around the world are participating in the 1st of November CDP Theme Day.
