City on a grain of salt. Tuzla means a place of salt and it lays on top of the salt lake. It is suspected it has been there for around 7000 years as one of the oldest places in Europe.

Quirky things

This is a small street in an old part of town. The buildings are also quite old and some of them run down. However, there is this shop that opened over 5 years ago (if not longer) selling plastic containers and buckets. I never saw a customer in it, yet the shop is still open for business and it doesn't look like it's going to close any time soon. In fact, I think I would miss it if it closed. Maybe I should go in one day and buy a lunch box for myself. You can never have enough plastic containers!!

What quirky things are hiding in your part of the world?
Have a quirky Wednesday.

Peace pipe

Is it a myth that Native Americans used to settle an argument by sitting around the fire, and instead of fighting shared a pipe? That's what we were taught when we were kids. We even have a saying 'lula mira' which literally means a pipe that signifies peace. After the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, someone put this picture on the apartment block calling for all the nations to 'share a pipe' and stop fighting.
Hope your week is peaceful.

PS Alice, Nathalie, Owen and Mimmu thank you for stopping by on my first day of posting.

And the Oscar goes to...

Hello everybody! My name is Lilly and as Jazzy told you I'll be pushing the button for her for the next few weeks. She is globe trotting (yet again!) while we mere mortals have to work.

As it's the Oscars night tonight, it's only appropriate to show you our local cinema. It's a fairly new cinema, only opend few years ago. It is small, but seats are very comfy and the screen is quite big. It is right next door to the National Theatre of Tuzla - two drama houses sitting nicely side by side. Both Jazzy and I spent a lot of time in this area when we were younger.

I am a big movie fan (although, I have to admit I prefer theatre). One of my favourite film has to be "Cabaret" with the wonderful Liza Minnelli and the Oscar for the best actor goes to,... Al Pacino.
What is your favourite film of all time? Who would you give the Oscar to?

Have a peacful and relaxed Sunday and see you all tomorrow, same time, same place.

Lilly x

See ya in two weeks

Hi dear all,
I'm off to sunny India for two weeks of hopefully fabulous time. I heard the food in Southern India is great and I'll report on my travels and adventures when I come back to "gray Europe".
While I'm away my dear sis will be pushing the button for me. So, I'm leaving you at the mercy of her quick and witty penmanship. She is lovey and sweet. You can call her Lilly.
Good bye to me and happy visiting to you.
Enjoy!!!
J xx

Blue building

Thanks to the mild winter, the work on the building renovation didn’t stop, so if/when you come to Tuzla in the summer the city center will be in a new shroud.
I love blue colour, don’t you.

Present shop

If you need a gift to buy to somebody here’s the place to come =)
They have a huge choice… and the prices are reasonable.

One day is warm and sunny, the other is rainy and cold so the shot from yesterday is past...

Termoelektrana

I was well out of the order not showing you the entrance of Tuzla before and here we are.
Now you are graced with a bleak winter photo with Tuzla sign. First in the background you see a vegetable green house and than coal burning power station – Termoelektrana.
Lets face it, it does look pretty ugly and it’s not environmentally friendly, but that’s were Tuzla gets electricity from. It started working 1963 and by the end of 2006 produced 100.256.294.000 kWh of electricity.

Have a nice week – end.

Luxury accommodation... an update

This is an update of the 'Luxury accommodation' post from October. I thought why not show you how the work is ‘progressing’. Well as you can see very slow progress has been done…it’ll be fun to see the same place in a few months time.

House that is no more...

Some of you asked if I have a photo of the house that has been knocked down I mentioned in yesterday's post.
Makes me sad just looking at these photos. The old house really had a great character.
In honour of the house I’m putting all four photos I took this summer.

Stay warm and have a great weekend.

Stay away, work in progress

Beautiful old building has been knocked down in order to build a new one on this very spot.
…rather liked the old one.
I presume I should update on the progress.

Well spotted, indeed

The other day while we were taking a walk in the city centre my Mum spotted these mushrooms so I took a photo of them, considering it’s winter we found it very strange.

I Love Tuzla

Sleeping flowers

One, two, three…
Oh, all the flowers are gone, still, they look, to say the least, whimsical.

Reality

I said: ‘Can you smile for me to take a photo of you?’
She smiled.
I said: ‘Are you cold?’
She said: ‘Yes’

Unfortunately this is not a rare site on the streets of Tuzla.

Have a good week.

'What a treat'

Hi people, I’ve been busy hence the absence in the last few days, hope you didn’t miss me too much =).

A while ago Meg from NelsonDP and I won very delicious prize playing a very interesting and sometimes ‘difficult’ quiz on BudapestDP by Zsolt and this is my thank you to him and d.e.l.i.c.i.o.u.s Szamos marzipan. What a treat. It was worth it, Zsolt!

Have a great Sunday.
