Sidewalk creatures

What one does to stop people parking cars on the sidewalk? Well in this city mostly nothing, but sometimes these yellow creatures are given life to allow pedestrians to have enjoyable and safe walk.

Extra hour - yuppie

In the whole Europe early Sunday morning, the clocks are going back one hour to Greenwich Mean Time, so we are all going to have an extra hour in bed. If you're interested here is an interesting article about it.

This clock is showing 'exact' time to passers by in the city centre, better known as Korzo where we all have fun.

Sunset at Farisa's

For some people sunsets are the favourite time of day, I’m not sure that’s the case with me, I’m kind of more nocturnal but since I’ve seen so many great sunset photos all around DP family I thought I should post one too.
So here it is, sunset at Farisa's boutique.

CD pirates part II

I started taking photos of CD stalls a wile ago, this one is very popular and to my knowledge the cheapest one in the city so it had to be included in my photo collection.

What do you listen at the moment on your ipods, CD players, radio…?

Panorama

This part of Tuzla is called Slatina, just across the road of the football stadium which is in Tusanj. That of course doesn’t mean anythning to any of you, I just thought you should know ;)

Creativity

This is a playground of the local high school – Gymnasium, as it’s called in some European countries.
It’s richly decorated in graffiti art which I happened to like.

Succulent watermelon

There’s nothing more refreshing than a cooled watermelon on a hot summer day. Summer is now gone and watermelon season is almost finished too… sigh… All that is left is what you see in the picture.

Concrete menagerie

The owners of this garden are so inclined so they have permanent display of concrete menagerie.
These peculiar ornaments became very popular in the surrounding villages for some unknown reason in the last few years. You wouldn't believe what one can find around gardens, the whole zoo… from roaring lions, unicorns to all sorts of birds and most certainly swans and pink flamingos are the most popular.

Lungs of the City

Everybody agrees the cities should have more trees to clean our polluted air. This tree seams very determined to do a good deed.

Coalminer

Tuzla and surrounding region has always been known for its coalmines. Coalminers played a big role in an uprising against German occupying army in the Second World War. They organized themselves as a part of a ‘partisan’ army.
This “Coalminer” monument was built to commemorate all the coalminers that lost their lives in the Second World War. Nearly every household had a small version of the “Coalminer”.

Almost every family had someone working in a coalmine industry.

Traditional dress

This photo was taken a while ago and shows our traditional dress. It’s always nice to see young people keeping old tradition alive.
They dress up like this for certain occasions like national celebrations and cultural events.

Old bike

Old bikes are always amazing to see on the street, how funny this one even has a bicycle lock - hehe as if someone's going to steal it and I quite like the colour of it - looks like a red necklace, nice accessory =)
Salut to people who are still using them, recycling things is always a positive thing.

Wood logs

This is a typical 'old' Bosnian house and this is a common site at this time of the year. People are preparing for colder days, chopping up the wood to use for heating in the winter on the countryside. This photo is taken just outside of the city where there isn't any central heating.
You can see a haystack just behind a house as the one I shown you two weeks ago.

Imagine temperature below zero, snow high up to your knees and you are sitting by the fire having a drink, laugh... Well I'm 'slowly' adapting to the autumn and still longing for the hot weather.

When you’re enjoying yourself nothing can stop you, not even rain in this case. Hope this man brought a dinner home.

'erbs 'r' us

This is a nasturtium Tropaeolum majus L. Apart from looking pretty, the leafs are very tasty and are used in salads, they taste of horseradish and apparently they’re very nutritious. This plant is widely spread in Bosnia, you can see it in most gardens.

Lovely

After yesterday's post I thought I should award you with a bunch of lovely flowers. I wouldn’t know the name but if you recognize them please let me know.

I was thinking abut DP and realized how we practice 'niceness' every day. When leaving comments everybody is trying to find something positive, creative, interesting (jokes are always welcome) in other people posts and that's admiring to me. Thank you all for that.

Little girl

This little girl is very sweet and you are already asking yourself why is she sitting on the pavement! Well, sad as it is she is a beggar, not homeless, not without family but a little girl working on the street. Very very sad.
I don’t think kids should ever ever be send on the street to earn money.

Night life

Korzo is the place where everyone likes to be in the evening during summer. When the colder days come cafés will slowly take place of the gardens and strolling up and down the 'korzo' (korzo is a strip like walkway).
It's a shame the summer doesn't last longer.

Sweetcorn 'bosanac'

I love nature, and this photo was taken recently just outside of the city on the corn field.
Bosnia is famous for its very sweet sweetcorn called ‘bosanac’.

CD of your choice

Where do you buy your CDs?

Pirate CDs are being sold on the street, agree or don’t but when the pockets are empty one doesn’t have much choice.
Well in Tuzla lots of things are up side down so people are bending corners whenever they can.

Natural History Collection

The building in the middle is a “Natural History Collection” or as we call it “Bioloska zbirka” I couldn’t translate it literary as a biological collection museum because it wouldn’t make sense but inside it’s all abut biology - nature at it’s best, where you can find all kinds of beetles, butterflies, birds... the whole wildlife.
I haven’t been inside for a while but I am certain it hasn’t changed. You must admit it doesn’t look bad from the outside.

Haystack

This is a common site just when you get out of the city. Haystacks everywhere, prepared for the winter.

It’s a haystack of a dried summer grass, the cows will soon eat it and it’ll not be there any more – till next year. Now it gives us a nice picture =)

Liberation day

Today Tuzla is celebrating 2nd of October – The Liberation Day.

After the yesterdays elections we all hope for the better future.
This SDP poster says: Unemployment in Tuzla Canton (TK) is getting higher! 86 000 people without job!

Theme day - Taxis

Hellooo Taxi...

Here you can see a selection of the taxis in Tuzla, you might have noticed they’re normal private cars...
Tuzla has 200 registered taxis but there’re abut 350 illegal taxis plying their trade without paying any taxes, which creates a huge problem for the legal ones who have to pay all the government charges. In a way it’s "understandable" because the employment situation is more than bad so people do whatever they can to survive.

Taxis are very cheep, most of them are running like buses, up and down the main street stopping everywhere and that would cost you the same as the bus fare which is 1KM = €0.50 or $0.70 if you deviate from the normal bus route it would cost you double 2KM or €1 or $1.40.
Taxis going from the main bus terminal to most of destinations within the city would charge you 5KM or €2.5 or $3.5. It’s not a privilege to use a taxi in Tuzla, everybody’s using them and when you get in you can expect for the taxi to stop on the next bus stop to pick up more passengers.
