Pekmezi seems to be a sort of molasses/treacle - in Turkey they make some from grapes. I've not had any fruit molasses, only black molasses which is the syrup left after crystallising the sucrose from sugar cane juice. Very good for you if you need iron. Also lovely when converted into Navy rum!

In the US apple molasses is cider cooked down/reduced to a syrup. It's supposed to be very tasty in combination with goat cheese.

pekmez is cooked for long time with no sugar or any other additives, it's considered healthy and good for respiratory problems.
